Hello and Welcome!
I am so excited and privileged to have your child in art class this year! My name is Mrs. Killeen and this is my first-year teaching at JYK Discovery Charter School. I previously taught art in the Chester-Upland School District to grades K-6. My favorite medium is acrylic painting however, I also love photography, wood block printing, ceramics, and the look on kid’s faces when they are extremely proud of something they just created.
My goal is to have all children be able to safely utilize a wide variety of art materials while learning about new techniques, artists, art history and global artisans. I know that each child has basic classroom supplies, such as crayons and pencils, that we may utilize in art class. We will provide most of the additional items that will be needed for each lesson. It would be very helpful if each child could have a large freezer storage or resealable bag to keep additional art supplies in. This will help to keep shared supplies to a minimum during a time when keeping things sanitary is extremely important. Also, if your child is in grades K-5, please provide them with an old-shirt or paint smock that they can keep in the regular classroom. Students in grades 6-8 should also use them when working remotely. This way we can protect all the beautiful new school clothes while exploring messier mediums like paint and clay.
This year I will be visiting children in their regular classrooms for art lessons. To ensure consistency, I am requesting that you assist your child with basic art class rules by using the Artist’s pledge:
A- always listen and follow directions
R- raise my hand before speaking
T- treat others and supplies with respect
I- imagine my own ideas and be creative
S- sit and stay in my seat
T- take time to clean up my mess
In addition, a few extra things to keep in mind for the safety and well-being of all:
- Masks must be worn at all times
- No sharing art supplies with other students.
I can’t wait to see what we can create together this year!
