ENRICHMENT ART IDEAS to explore with your family! Starting June 1st till school ends June 12th I will post different art places and ideas to explore virtually. Let me know what you learn or think about them by writing me at: [email protected]. I'd love to hear from you!
Week of June 1st: EXPLORE THE MAGIC GARDENS (in S. Philly). The artist who created the Magic Gardens located on South Street is Isiah Zagar. He has created "mosaics" all around South Philly and other parts of the city. He uses small pieces of pottery (or "tesserae"), mirror, broken objects to create large, colorful works of art that enhance our city. See some videos below from the Magic Gardens YouTube page. Enjoy! (Question: how could you make a paper mosaic at home using scissors to cut up pieces of magazine or colored construction paper and glue to make a face, animal, flower, landscape, house, or abstract design, etc?) Hopefully you can take a tour at the Magic Gardens in the future and maybe even meet the artist. It truly is magical! Meanwhile, you can visit: www.phillymagicgardens.org

ART LESSONS (WEEK OF 5/4/2020)
How to create 3-D Graffiti Lettering with a drop shadow to make it pop!
In zoom class we watched this short youtube film:
https://youtu.be/IXm8LqHP5zw
TO DO: (After watching the video): Draw a wave line on top of the page (hold paper horizontally). Then draw 2nd wave (curved) line a couple of inches below the first. Within these lines write your name (lightly) in capital letters with space between each letter. Then double-stroke the letter to create a block letter. To add a "drop shadow" decide on source of lighting (top left or top right) and then create a 3rd line on the side of each letter that is opposite of the light source and wraps under the letter. Then fill in. You may add colors to the lettering and create an interesting background as well. Leave a bit of white on top of all letters as a "highlight": this will make the lettering look more three-dimensional! You can email me a picture of your finished lettering to: [email protected] to get credit for a grade, if you were not in class, or wish to have yours posted on the art gallery page!

ART LESSONS (WEEK OF 4/27/2020)
Learn about artists that use "Unconventional Materials"!
In zoom class we watched the short youtube film (see Earth Day 4/20 lesson).
TO DO: We found one object in the room we were in or some students ran to the kitchen to grab a grocery item to draw. I mentioned artist Andy Warhol who created prints showing ordinary objects like "Campell's Tomato Soup" cans. See a picture of that here. Draw an object, color it in, email to me, if not in class (notice basic forms/shapes: cylinders, rectangular cubes, spheres, etc).
*Big idea: we can get inspired by objects and materials around us.
**For extra credit: some students actually made a sculpture out of recycled art and brought it to class to share! Thank you to those students who were able to share their art! You can always email me a picture of any art work you're doing to: [email protected]! I will post it on the Student Work gallery on this site!

ART LESSONS (WEEK OF 4/20/2020)
Inspired by Earth Day: we're going to learn about artists that use "Unconventional Materials"!
Watch this short youtube film about these unusual artists:
Andy Goldsworthy, Michelle Stitzlei, El Anatsui, Jean Shin, Vik Muniz
https://safeyoutube.net/w/oB85
Questions to answer (pause video if need to review): Which artist uses stones and sticks? Which artist used food to create the Mona Lisa? Which artist created a giant wave made out of old vinyl records? Which artist did you like the most? Why? Which artist made work you didn't understand or didn't like? Why? What are "conventional" (usual) art materials? What are "unconventional" art materials?
Explain how these artists could be called "Earth Day artists"? Do any of them recycle, reuse, repurpose? How does this help the Earth?
TO DO: Make repurposed art using whatever's in your house that you would put out in the recycling container or you don't need anymore (ask parents first!) . What could you use to connect the objects? If you don't actually make the 3-D art (assemblage or collage), can you draw the objects together as a "still life"?
MATERIALS: If drawing, you just need pencil, paper, colors. If creating a repurposed art, use objects (with parents' permission) from the recycling container or fun objects laying around. Connect with string, wire, glue, clips, rubber bands, etc. *Feel free to take a picture of what you make and email me at: [email protected]
