SPRING BREAK ART! (WEEK OF 4/13-17)
CELEBRATING EARTH DAY (coming up on April 22nd)!
Let's look at Artists who use Earth materials to create!
People have manipulated nature throughout time for their use.
TO DO: WATCH & REFLECT (see at least 2 videos in first article):
https://theculturetrip.com/north-america/usa/articles/15-incredible-works-of-land-art/
https://www.morrisarboretum.org/events_patrick_dougherty.shtml
[Morris Arboretum is right in NW Philadelphia. Patrick Dougherty involves people from the community to help him make his StickWorks project. It then lasts about 3 years until it falls apart. He has already created a few projects there that you can visit in the future. He just created another large structure at the arboretum last Spring!]
**Questions to think and write about:
**After viewing these films, is there one (or more) Earth Artist you really enjoyed or found interesting?
**How is this work different than the way you usually think of Art you might see in a museum?
** Is this ART? Why or why not?
**Why is it temporary? Why would an artist make something that only lasts until it degrades back into the earth?
**Does it make you look at Nature differently? Can you find “art” in nature?
**Would you have the patience to create art in this way? Why or why not? (is it too large in scale? Is it tedious? Does it make sense to you?)
**What feelings does the nature art bring out in you? Does it work well within its surroundings?
If you would like to share any of your thoughts you can email me at: [email protected]

Art Lesson (Week of 4/6/2020) Art History: Leonardo da Vinci & Pablo Picasso! Writing Assignment: COMPARE AND CONTRAST PORTRAITS Observing the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci (Top, left, Italian Renaissance, 1506) and portrait of Marie-Therese Walter by Pablo Picasso (Spanish painter, Cubism, 1937). Artists throughout the ages have been fascinated with portraits of people. Here are two famous artists you may have heard of, da Vinci and Picasso (father of Cubism), both creating a portrait of a woman in a seated position. They are similar and yet not the same. Let’s see what they have in common and then discuss how they are very different. TO DO:
How are these portraits different? CLUES: What colors are used in each painting (palette)? Which painting is more “muted” (low key tones or similar tones on the Color Wheel) and which is more “vibrant” (high contrast of colors or “Opposite Colors” What pairs of opposite colors do you see)? How does this difference in palette and use of colors affect the “tone” of the painting? What do you think of the blue face by Picasso? Does the lady’s face appear to be more than one face? Which painting uses “Pattern”? What are the women wearing? (how do their clothes tell you which lady may be richer or of a higher position, or not), how are their hands positioned? What do those gestures mean to you? What’s in the background of each lady? How does the background behind Mona Lisa and behind Marie Therese make you feel about the space they are in? Is Picasso’s space realistic? Is da Vinci’s space realistic? Are they both using “Perspective” (which one seems more natural than the other)? OTHER QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT:
About da Vinci’s Mona Lisa https://youtu.be/wZWM7JO_Woc About Pablo Picasso and his life https://youtu.be/33BCnqpS8NA **SCAVENGER HUNT: Find Leonard da Vinci’s Mona Lisa by visiting the Louvre Museum in Paris where it’s been hanging since the 1800s. Find the LOUVRE and take the tour of the Renaissance exhibit with the Virtual Museum link below**! (I tried finding out where Picasso’s Marie Therese Walter painting is hanging now but could not find that info. EXTRA CREDIT to any student who can find what museum it is in!!! ) ** VISIT A MUSEUM AROUND THE WORLD! ** HTTPS://WWW.MENTALFLOSS.COM/ARTICLE/75809/12-WORLD-CLASS-MUSEUMS-YOU-CAN-VISIT-ONLINE Again, feel free to email me your answers to: [email protected] I would be very interested in your answers and will write back with feedback.
