Art Lesson (Week of 4/6/2020)
Draw a Storyboard of A Day
What is a storyboard?
Definition: A storyboard is a graphic representation of how your video will unfold, shot by shot.
It’s made up of a number of squares with illustrations or pictures representing each shot, with notes about what’s going on in the scene and what’s being said in the script during that shot. Think of it as sort of a comic book version of your script.
See more about this here and view some of the videos and read the links.
https://www.vyond.com/resources/what-is-a-storyboard-and-why-do-you-need-one/
INSPIRATION: Here is an EXAMPLE of storyboards made by a young student about her current experience during the shelter-in-place. Control + Click on this link to see it:: https://bit.ly/346JBjX
Use a Magnifying Icon and click on the art work to see it larger!
TO DO: You can print out a Storyboard Template by going to Google or you can just sketch out (free hand or use a ruler) 6 or 8 or 10 rectangles (either 2”Hx3”W or 3”x4”) with space underneath each to write your story for each “frame” (think movies or graphic novels or comic books!): MATERIALS NEEDED: Just pencil, paper, a ruler (if you have one or any straight edge), markers or colored pencils.
I would love to see your storyboards!! If you have a question about this assignment or wish to share what you drew and wrote, take a photo of what you did and email me (or have your parent email me) to: [email protected]. I will review what you send and give positive feedback.
CAREERS: Learning about Storyboarding can lead to a career as a video-maker or filmmaker or gaming design.
*ONGOING ASSIGNMENT: How would you EDIT your storyboard to change the focus or add new characters? Or depict another typical day. How can you storyboard a favorite game you like to play or a fantasy dream?
Meanwhile, stay safe! And, stay tuned for other fun lessons next week! Ms. Z

- Draw a story line about what you’re doing these days being at home. Remember you can use "stick figure" drawings if you want (the Story is the most important thing!) Choose one day from morning to night (including waking up, getting dressed, eating meals, doing your assignments, playing, watching tv, getting ready for bed, etc.) Think about details you want the viewer to see.
- Question: Is it easier for you to start writing about it first OR drawing it first? You can start either way. When you’re done writing and sketching each frame, feel free to go over your pencil lines with a black marker or sharpie, and even add color.
- Have you read any graphic novels like Dav Pilkey’s Captain Underpants or Dog Man? Or Spiderman comics? The directors of The Avengers movie hired a storyboard artist to help with filming it. Think of different shots (frames) you remember from the movie (or any movie you’ve seen).
- Use different techniques when drawing to focus your storytelling: To focus in on a person’s face and what they’re saying you might want to draw that person Up Close using the Zoom technique. Explore Zoom In, Zoom Out, Long Shot (distance, wide shot).
I would love to see your storyboards!! If you have a question about this assignment or wish to share what you drew and wrote, take a photo of what you did and email me (or have your parent email me) to: [email protected]. I will review what you send and give positive feedback.
