ENRICHMENT ART IDEAS to explore with your family! Starting June 1st till school ends June 12th I will post different art places and ideas to explore virtually. Let me know what you learn or think about them by writing me at: [email protected]. I'd love to hear from you!
Week of June 1st: EXPLORE THE MAGIC GARDENS (in S. Philly). The artist who created the Magic Gardens is Isiah Zagar. He has created "mosaics" all around South Philly and other parts of the city. He uses small pieces of pottery (or tesserae), mirror, shells, broken objects to create large, colorful works of art that enhance our city. See some videos below from the Magic Gardens YouTube page. Enjoy! (Question: how could you make a paper mosaic at home using scissors to cut up pieces of magazine or colored construction paper and glue to make a face, animal, flower, house, etc?) Hopefully you can take a tour there in the future and maybe even meet the artist. It truly is magical! Visit: www.phillymagicgardens.org

ART IDEAS TO TRY! (WEEKS OF 4/27/2020 & 5/4/2020)
4/27 week: Make a "Collage" (cut and paste) of something Spring-y, like a tree, flower, sun, the word "Spring", etc.
Materials: pasta (any kind you might find in your kitchen, ask permission first!), glue, magazines you can cut up, scissors, paper (or cardboard to hold the pasta and glue better), markers or crayons or paint (optional)
TO DO: 1) First Draw your picture and fill the space with your Spring-y image. 2) You can outline it darker with a marker or crayon. 3) If using pasta, arrange it to fill the space. Glue it in place. If you have paint you can color the pasta noodles and let it dry. You can also cut up colors from a magazine and glue them around the pasta or instead of it and fill the drawing. 3) You can also write a poem about Spring!
5/4 week: Make a "Special Lady's Day" card for this Sunday (for either Mom, Grandmom, Aunt, Teacher, Neighbor, etc).
To Do: Take a 9x12 construction paper (any color), fold it in half. Decorate the front with a huge heart (hold horizontal or vertical). Color it in or use stickers. Inside, write the person's name you're giving the card to (you can even email her a picture of your card!) and draw something fun or write a poem for her! More next week!

ART LESSONS (WEEK OF 4/20/2020)
Drawing inspired by "The Lorax" (a good Earth Day story!):
TO DO:
Listen to the The Lorax (by Dr. Seuss) story first and discuss
https://youtu.be/EdWesdMfyd4
Questions: Have you ever planted a seed that grew? If yes, what did you have to do to make it grow? If not, what kind of plant would you like to grow? Is it a real plant or a fantasy plant? How can planting a tree help the Earth? Is a "Truffula" tree a real kind of tree? Does it look familiar?
MATERIALS NEEDED: Pencil, paper, crayons or colored pencils or markers
Draw yourself planting a seed in different little pictures [use different boxes on the same page like a comic book to show different parts of your action]: Finding a pot, adding earth (dirt), making a hole, putting the pot on a window sill, seeing a little plant beginning to grow, then the plant getting really big. Maybe the plant has flowers or fruits or strange leaves with patterns and colors that were a surprise to you! OR: DRAW A TRUFFULA TREE! (see example on the left!)
*Your parent can email a photo of what you draw to: [email protected]
I would love to see what you are creating!! :)
